Printed Silk Fabrics Sewing Tips: How to sew a silk Tank Top!
Do you have a favorite tank top that fits comfortably, yet is getting too worn, and you can’t find any more like it in the department stores? Use that one as a pattern to make another one, or two.
1. As long as you have basic sewing knowledge and know how to operate a sewing machine, making a new tank top using your old tank top as a pattern isn’t difficult. The first step is to take apart your old tank top. Cut apart at the seams. You will have your front piece and back piece and depending on the style, ribbing around the top and/or the bottom. Cut very carefully – remember these pieces are your guide – your pattern.
2. Take your tank top pattern pieces with you to the fabric store. Choose fabric that has the same amount of stretch as the “pattern.” To check for stretch – lay the old fabric on top of the new fabric – with both hands, pull slightly to be sure it is the same stretch. Remember the stretch goes AROUND the body. If you need help on how much fabric to purchase, see a store attendant for advise. Most stretch fabric is sold in 65- inch width, so the cost is minimal. Choose fabric for ribbing if needed. Purchase matching thread.
3. Wash and dry (in dryer) your fabric, to prevent shrinkage later on. Lay it smoothly on table and place the pattern on top. Don’t make the mistake of the stretch being vertical. Pin the pattern to fabric.
4. Now you’re ready to cut. ADD 1/4 inch while cutting to allow for 1/4 inch seams. ADD 1/2 inch to length. You may want to use a fabric marker to draw the cutting lines before-hand. If your tank top will have ribbing, make sure this is also laid out so as the stretch is the correct direction.
5. Be sure to have a needle made for stretch fabric in the sewing machine. Turn your dial to appropriate stretch stitch. If your tank top is to have ribbing at top or bottom, sew this to the top first – RIGHT sides together – fold ribbing over to WRONG side. Stitch-in-the-ditch (sewing in the seam so stitching is barely visible).
6. With RIGHT sides together, sew tank top front to back (1/4 inch seam).
7. Turn up hem and stitch – don’t pull on fabric too tightly!
Now that you have completed a tank top, you’ll start looking at more of your old clothing as patterns!
